Certificate in TESOL

The Certificate in TESOL is a program designed for graduates with near-native proficiency in English who want to begin a teaching career.  It is taught entirely in English, and provides the basic training for teaching English as a non-native language.

The program is a four-week intensive program taught in the first semester. It consists of three course elements linked to teaching practice:

Language: This course provides the tools for describing and analyzing English. It covers the fundamentals of English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, together with the structure of talk and written texts. The course addresses geographical, social and stylistic variation in English, and the status of English as a global auxiliary language.

Methodology: This course provides an introduction to contemporary approaches to teaching speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.   Attention is also given to evaluating, using, creating and supplementing teaching materials.

Classroom interaction: This course focuses on basic teaching practices and techniques, with an emphasis on the classroom environment.  The course covers the essentials of classroom management, classroom ethics, lesson planning, teacher reflection, and the teacher-student relationship.

The program also includes teaching practice and classroom observation of experienced teachers.

Materials
Two books are used throughout the course:
Practical English Usage by Michael Swan (Oxford University Press)
Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener (Macmillan)

Grading
The Certificate in TESOL is awarded at two levels: 'High pass' and 'Pass'.  Students who complete the Certificate with a 'High pass' grade can apply for admission to the MA (TESOL) program.

Fee
The fee for the Certificate in TESOL is 20,000 Thai baht (approximately US$700). This covers all tuition and supervision, in-class materials, and use of the Library and Internet facilities, but not the two prescribed books (which students should provide for themselves).
